Promoting yourself as a speaker, expert, or authority is a way to get publicity for your book, company, organization, products, or services, as well as get work as a speaker, consultant, panelist, or workshop/seminar leader. Besides promoting your knowledge about a subject, you can highlight any personal stories that make you especially interesting, such as how you made a breakthrough discovery or overcame great odds to become successful.

If you're promoting yourself as a speaker, expert,  or authority, a good approach is to tie what you are doing to something in the news or to  a breakthrough discovery or unique new product launched by your company. 

An objective of this campaign might be:

    - an interview with you

    - a publication of an article or column by you

Some strategies to use include the following:

     - Call your local media with the help of an in-house assistant or professional PR person.

     - Send a query letter or press release about what you have been doing that is newsworthy or ties in with something in the news. 

    - Target editors or radio/TV talk show hosts or producers who might be interested in what you are doing.  Unless this is a topic in the news, target editors, producers, and hosts who cover your field or do personality, features, or general business topics.  

If you are pitching yourself as an expert, based on what your company does or the subject of your books or articles, take the following into consideration:

   - Tie your company, organization, or yourself as an expert into something in the news.

   -  Promote yourself as an expert who can comment on that topic, because of your books and samples or what your company or organization does.

You can send out a query letter or press release to thousands of contacts in the media yourself or work with a publicist who can do a more personal targeted campaign to selected media.
